Durban City FC have turned their Nedbank Cup win into a permanent community benefit by opening a new sports court at a primary school. The club and sponsor Nedbank officially opened the multipurpose facility at Ocean View Primary School in Chatsworth on Tuesday. Representatives from the Premier Soccer League, The Sports Trust and the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture were present.
A cup win's legacy
The court was funded by a community program connected to the club's Nedbank Cup win. The facility will be used by the school's pupils, other nearby schools and the Chatsworth area. It offers a secure area for sports including futsal, netball, volleyball, basketball and tennis.
Club sponsorship manager Tutu Ntuli gave the school a signed shirt and spoke to the pupils. "When Durban City FC won the Nedbank Cup in May, we knew that a victory like this belongs to more than just the club," Ntuli said. "It belongs to the community that stands behind us, and we wanted to give something back."
He told the children to make the most of the new court. "This court is yours. Use it, respect it and look after it."
This is the 11th sports facility Nedbank has given away through this cup-related community program. For Durban City, the project spreads the benefits of their cup win off the field. The club thanked Nedbank and all partners for creating a lasting symbol of their cup run that gives local young people a real chance to be active and learn from sport.
