Durban City FC have appointed Eric Tinkler as their new head coach, the club announced on Thursday. The 56-year-old takes over from Khalil Ben Youssef, who left before the recent FIFA international break, and will face a KZN derby against AmaZulu FC in his first game in charge on Tuesday, 13 October.
Chairman Farook Kadodia, who previously worked with Tinkler at Maritzburg United, stated the coach's experience was key. "Eric brings a wealth of experience in South African football and understands what is required at this level," Kadodia said.
Tinkler, who has coached Orlando Pirates, Cape Town City and SuperSport United, most recently led Asante Kotoko to the 2026 Democracy Cup. He does not plan major tactical changes, aiming instead to build on the club's recent success which includes being reigning Nedbank Cup champions. "I'm excited to be part of what is being built here at Durban City FC," Tinkler said.
The immediate task is to improve a league position of 10th, with the team on seven points from seven games. Their next match is a significant test against AmaZulu, who are third in the Premier Soccer League standings. Tinkler's primary objectives are a top-eight league finish and a strong run in the CAF Confederation Cup.
