Durban City FC have signed Ugandan international goalkeeper Salim Magoola on a free transfer. The 31-year-old arrives to bolster the squad's goalkeeping department following the retirement of last season's number one, Darren Keet.

The club confirmed the move this week. "Durban City FC is pleased to announce the signing of Ugandan international goalkeeper, Salim Magoola," the club said in a statement. Magoola joins fellow keepers Frederick Asare and Aden Dryer in the squad as head coach Khalil Ben Youssef prepares for a busy schedule.

Magoola was a free agent after leaving Richards Bay FC, where he made 85 appearances and kept 34 clean sheets after joining from Pretoria Callies in July 2022. His opportunities reduced last season as Ian Otieno became the preferred choice.

His experience is seen as vital for a Durban City side sitting 11th in the Betway Premiership with seven points from eight games. The team, who are also Nedbank Cup holders and have qualified for the CAF Confederation Cup, face a tough trip to league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns on 1 November.

The Ugandan brings a wealth of experience, having won league titles in Uganda with Express FC and KCCA FC before successful spells with Sudanese giants Al-Merrikh and Al-Hilal. He has been a regular for the Uganda Cranes, featuring in three Africa Cup of Nations tournaments. His arrival provides immediate cover and competition ahead of the club's continental campaign, where they will face AS Port Louis 2000 in the Confederation Cup preliminary round.
