Durban City FC has signed three University of KwaZulu-Natal student-athletes, Wandile Gigaba, Amukelwa Tau, and Lwandiso Yalo, to its DStv Diski Challenge squad for the 2026/27 season. The trio was officially unveiled during a ceremony at the UKZN Football Stadium on the Howard College campus. The recruitment follows a strategic partnership established between UKZN and Durban City FC to strengthen high-performance football development and create pathways for talented student-athletes into the professional ranks. Durban City FC Chief Executive Officer Younus Kadodia said the recruitment reflects the club's long-term commitment to investing in young talent and building strong community partnerships. For 18-year-old Wandile Gigaba, a first-year Bachelor of Education student from Mpembeni in the uMkhanyakude District, the opportunity brings him closer to a lifelong dream. "My family has been my biggest support, especially my parents," said Gigaba. "Their sacrifices and belief in me have motivated me to keep improving both on and off the field. Joining Durban City FC will help me develop my abilities, learn from experienced coaches and compete at a higher level. It is an important step towards my dream of playing professional football." Executive Director for Corporate Relations at UKZN, Dr Normah Zondo, described the recruitment as a breakthrough moment for youth development. "This is truly an exciting moment as we celebrate not only a partnership but the opening of real opportunities for our students," she said. "We are immensely proud of the three selected to play for Durban City FC. They represent the incredible talent and potential within our university community."
